Commercial litho-printers

Ink on paper

Pagination/Paper/Stock

Lito - Higher volumes of print. Plate system. Aluminium plates. 4 Different plates. CPT (computer to plate). Laser burns the coating and leaves the design.

B1/B2/5 colour. Sheet fed. vegetable based inks.

B1- 720x1020. 20mm grip

SRO1 640x900

60gsm - 450gsm

Litho is better than digital for printing

Gloss, silk uncoated

Use uncoated generally

Paper affects the art work

Bright colours + Sharp = silk

If dots spread into paper, duller image

gains weight with the addition of ink

Sealer dries the ink but doesn't smudge

Litho

'Little bit of print knowledge can go a long way'

£100 for full set of plates (4)

500 means  litho takes over becomes cheaper than digital

Pagination

Cheapest way of doing a book, using 'self cover' - same weight cover as the pages.

extra cost for a heavier cover

28 pages are always expensive. work in multiples 8 and 16 pages

Fedrigoni - Paper stockist

Tumble stroke work & turn machine

Cant get a sharp looking image on uncoated

Digital print

Smaller paper size than lito

4 folded A4s cant fit on a digi print sheet

320x450mm

350gsm

Full colour, no metallics or fluorescents

Ink is powdered

B1 is best for large quantities

Things designers get wrong when printing:

  • Bleed images, 3mm bleed around art work. Strokes, crop marks.
  • Spot colours in artwork needed convert to cmyk
  • business cards - dont put 8 cards onto A4 spread. Keep pages as singles not spreads.
  • Send as PDF and original format
  • don't use spot colours as transparency
  • don't use a 60mb A3 image
  • Keep sizes the size they're used
  • artwork at 300dpi

Yahoo website mock ups:

We were set a one day responsive task to redesign Yahoos website due to the fact it was massively missing out on visitors as Google was by far the favoured home page for teenagers.

This was originally a brief set by YCN as part of a competition.

Most people we were working in groups during this one day brief, but I was working alone.

We were informed that the usual target audience for this website was 13-18 year olds so for this reason, this was the age in which I was basing my redesign on.

A vital piece of information which massively effected my design choices was that teenagers visited social network sites in this order:

Facebook - Twitter - Instagram

Plan of action:

I had chosen to re colour the website as I thought the original purple colour was something which I associated with the older generation and other brands such as Monarch airlines using this tint of purple instantly screamed out as something I must change to make more relevant to the audience.

I chose to change the branding out Yahoo's site to a bright pungent lime green as I had done some research and no other social networks sites or generally popular sites to teenagers used this colour scheme and I felt it was a unisex colour which would be pleasing on the eye to my target audience.

Moving on I decided to create some app panels which instantly appears on your Yahoo home page, and when the user receives a facebook notification, the content of this is displayed on their home page and with a simple click of their mouse, the facebook app grows in size to reveal the detailed information. This same transition happens with the Instagram, twitter and youtube function.

The small youtube app allows the user to select a specific song or playlist when the app is opened and allows the user to pause the song or increase the volume when the app tab has been shrunk.

The order of these app tabs is based around the research that teenagers visit facebook then instagram etc and that explains the composition of these tabs.

So far these are the only changes I have implemented on their site, keeping the news content the same as that is Yahoos content and not something for their designer to mess around with, obviously I could attempt to improve the aesthetic of their news, but at this stage I haven't.

Final designs:

Here are my final submissions for the Royal Mint brief.

I have chosen to involve the design with and without the "One pound" writing on the design due to the fact I'm not sure how necessary this is as the 12 sides of the coin all say 'one pound' so it's clear how much currency this is. But saying that, I have submitted both designs to royal mint so they can decide if it fits the requirements of the brief.
Here shows my design as a vector format which the Brief requested.
This design involves the writing stating that this is a one pound coin.

This design does not involve the writing stating that this is a one pound coin because I am not happy with the design and placement of this piece of type so I have chosen to leave it out in certain places.

Here is where i've mocked up the design onto an actual photograph of the coin, again this is where is says that the coin is 'one pound' but I do not like how that looks at this stage, so below I have chosen to remove it.

Here is my email submitting my design to Royal mint, I have involved my user number and my name and given a brief description explaining the design on my coin:

I related my design piece on the new 12 sided pound coin to typical Britishness and how other nations stereotype as very polite and friendly, I consider this a happy association and for this reason I have researched different words used to greet someone in the UK and using a typically British typeface, I have created this coin design.

Limited edition coin research

Here is the proposed look for the queens side of the new 12 sided one pound coin.
The design of the actual coin its self has obviously changed from how they usually look, now implementing a silver inside (similar to the existing £2) and obviously the 12 sides.

Here is a previous limited edition coin from royal mint, guessing this has been commissioned for a designer to create. It appears as if it is celebrating the anniversary for the London Undergrounds opening.
Here is another beautiful coin design which pays homage to the famous British Novelist, Charles Dickens. This typography based piece is very attractive to look at and very well designed. Makes excellent use of typography.

Royal mint coin research:

Royal mint coin research:

I have chosen to photograph high quality images of current coins which were inside my wallet. I am doing this to get a grasp of the designs on the current coins and also to see the angles and how they look once the design has been embossed/raised onto the coin using hot metal.

Current circulating pound coin.
Look like quite an old from the damage on the coin and the scratches but this is most likely the pound coin that everyone thinks of when they are asked to imagine a coin.

I think these photographs will give me an insight into how coins actually look and how they age over time, I should consider how they age and their legibility once they have circulated for a few years and become worn.

Seminar: User experience design

User experience design UXD

My thoughts on what User experience design are that it is a form of design created to make the journey to a site etc easier and more joyful for the user. Different to user interface.

Seminar notes:

How users interact and how users exist in a system

Visual interface gets passed on to Gdesigners rather than Gdesigners getting involved with UXD

What products or services can you think that have significant user experience concerns? Particularly in contrast to competing products/services

FACEBOOK / MY SPACE

Facebook is very controlled and not as personal as myspace used to be in the past, as on my space you could used to move around your own layout and create your own personal profile.

YOUTUBE/VEVO/VIMEO

Youtube specialises the suggestions to you, and their design and grid offers a very wide variety of choices the moment you reach their site, all usually very relevant

Vevo looks very professional and beautiful and as your reach their site, very good quality videos are recommended to you, ones which look very smart and clean cut. Accordingly, fans can not upload their own videos

TUMBLR/BLOGGER

Apparently Tumblr started off as a blogging service for all generations but it has become very teenage based and generally only pictures get re blogged or uploaded

Blogger now has established a completely different name for it's self compared to tumblr, in the sense that professional people and academics can use blogger as an outlet for their work and something to gain a high amount of views

AMAZON/EBAY

Amazon's site instantly hits you as something professional and trustworthy (especially with their price match/comparison) and their products are displayed more like a shop.

Ebay's products appear more of a wider selection and they baffle you with the amount of choices, I think the reason behind this is so the customer always feels they are getting the best price for their purchase

ASOS/AMERICAN APPAREL

Asos looks massively more like a clothing site in comparison to AA which hits you as some kind of hipster pornography website.

Site objective

I feel the rules to filling in the information for this chart are working from the bottom upwards
Site objective
The objectives of my site are to entertain people and has a collection of images and a way to display them in an aesthetic way.
User needs
What users need from my website is to feel like the information and images they have seen has entertained and fulfilled their needs.
Functional specifications
I as the designer designs the specification of my website, but as we have researched into responsive design, I will be creating my website responsively so it works on all new media formats.
Information architecture
This will be established by a template page and links and buttons which navigate you between pages.
Information design
I shall decide how the information and body copy fonts has been designed for highest forms of legibility and interview my target audience to get the best and most accurate results
Interface design
I will be designing the interface of the site and how the over all things looks, the content will justify this and my target market research will hone whether it is correct or not.
Navigation design
Similar to architecture of the site, this will be the ease of scrolling around the page and skipping between links.
Visual design
Again, a topic which I will be referring to my target market for, to ensure the aesthetic design of the site is not jeopardising the information

Study task 6 - New media theory: The medium and the massage

Find a piece of theoretical knowledge relating to New media

Late 60s books can be relevant despite initially thinking they wouldn't be relevant as they would be informed in the most modern form of new media but, if done well, these books can still be very relatable.

Medium is the message is a book which focuses more around electronics rather than media.

Study Task 01 - Social interaction theories of identity

1. Read the document (theories of identity) provided thoroughy (see eStudio under 'useful documents).

2. Summarise the key concepts and terminology of each theory (Stryker's and McCall/Simmons').

Compare and contrast each and discuss efficacy of each.

3. BLOG TASK: (300-500 WORDS)

DISCUSS SIMILARITIES/CONNECTIONS BETWEEN INTERACTIONIST IDENTITY

THEORY AND PSYCHOANALYSIS (briefly).

SPECIFICALLY:

EGO-IDEAL (FREUD)

DESIRE (FREUD / LACAN)

ID, EGO, SUPER-EGO (FREUD)

THE MIRROR STAGE (LACAN)

You do not need to discuss each of these at length. Discussing one in more detail is better.

1 - Summarise the key concepts and terminology of each theory (Stryker's and McCall/Simmons').

1. The more individuals are committed to an identity, the higher will this identity be in their salience hierarchy.

2. The degree of commitment to an identity is a positive and additive function of
A. The extent to which this identity is positively valued by others and broader cultural definitions
B. The more congruent the expectations of others on whom one depends for an identity
C. The more extensive the network of individuals on whom one depends
D. The larger the number of persons in a network on whom one depends for an identity The Consequences of High Salience
3. The higher in a person’s salience hierarchy is an identity, the more likely will that individual A. Emit role performances that are consistent with the role expectations associated with that identity
B. Perceive a given situation as an opportunity to perform in that identity
C. Seek out situations that provide opportunities to perform in that identity The Consequences of Commitment to Identity
4. The greater the commitment to an identity, the greater will be
A. The effect of role performances on self-esteem
B. The likelihood that role performances will reflect institutionalized values and norms Changing Commitments to Identity
5. The more external events alter the structure of a situation, the more likely are individuals to adopt new identities.
6. The more changes in identity reinforce and reflect the value-commitments of the individual, the less the individual resists change in adopting a new identity.

Contemporary Sociological Theory.

J.H turner - Published 2013

Aims - Understand how to 'close read' an academic text.

How to use a secondary text as an introduction to key theoretical texts

Discuss how identity theories can inform Graphic Design practice.

Herbert Mead - psychologist

In a group we discussed - Stryker (1980)

- Role performances based on information in a given situation
- We adopt identities that compliment others in the current social scenario.
- Self objectification
- The process of learning what identity to adopt in a given social scenario
- Social commitment so if an identity is validated then commitment will increase.
- Social structures (expectations)
- Social structures can be rigid or fluid.
- Salience Hierarchy is the hierarchy of identities based on success and important to the individuals.

2. Summarise the key concepts and terminology of each theory (Stryker's and McCall/Simmons').

McCall and Simmons (1960)

- Self criticism - self review is more important than others.
- Idealised idea of self - ideal self
- Always some dissatisfaction as we hold high standards for ourselves.
- Over perform to begin with then adjustments are made in reaction to others approval/disapproval
- Places to much emphasis on self image
- Ideal image in line with plans and goals.
- Identify as a driving force of behaviour
- 'Exchange negotiations'

How can this relate to Graphic Design?

-Social structure can determine a target audience
- Taking part in crits can reaffirm if your'e doing your work correctly and your'e on the right path
- Helps define your target audience.
- Your design identity should reach out to who you want to design.

Task 3:

Id, Ego and Superego
[ by Saul McLeod email icon published 2008 ]

"Perhaps Freud's single most enduring and important idea was that the human psyche (personality) has more than one aspect. Freud (1923) saw the psyche structured into three parts (i.e. tripartite), the id, ego and superego, all developing at different stages in our lives."

During my experiences at uni and relating to my summer project, I had decided to visit the student councillor about enquiries about my memory, we also got into a conversation about stress and motivation, during this chat she went into great detail about Freud's Super ego complex and helped my understand this in context and relation to my life. I was handed a diagram of how super ego works, consisting of Parent - Adult and child states, which I now look at and understand.

'The super-ego can stop one from doing certain things that one's id may want to do.'

This relates to Freud's theories based around the human Psyche and the complex way in which the subconscious brain works.

Ego ideal consists of 3 stages in the brain, and relate to your adult life as you grow up and change.

Coincidence how the 'creative free child' spans off from the child/ID stage and that we are art students expressive creativity and also independence.

Freud's theory relates to both of a person's parents and how one of them usually takes the roll of controlling parent and also nurturing parent, usually the father takes the roll of controlling and mother nurturing but obviously if a person only has one parent, this parent must act as both.

This theory of ego ideal can definitely relate to a work place scenario and also the two theories proposed by Stryker and McCall/Simmons, in a work place environment, the parent roll would be that of your boss and commander, the adult role would be your own independence and the child would be part of your brain which is bored and distracted by the task at hand.

These theories basically relate to the standards of conformity and being a normal and well rounded member of public and doing things which people expect.

In all honesty, I consider my self to have less of a grasp of my own ego ideal and feel that the child sides takes over quite a lot and leads me to reckless and silly behaviour which entertains myself.
This could relate to the fact I didn't live with or see my dad (regularly) from a young age and how my mother acted as the nurturing parent but obviously my father who I see as a role model and also as controlling parent, never specifically first handedly guided me.

In a way though, I think the fact that my personality revolves more around the child stage rather than the adult one, this impacts my design work as I have a lot more freedom to express my self rather than being confound to margins and briefs, In effect, I feel I have a slightly greater capacity to think outside the box and not conform to standards.

Ego ideal Freud

The ego ideal (German: Ideal-Ich) is the inner image of oneself as one wants to become.[1] Alternatively, 'The Freudian notion of a perfect or ideal self housed in the superego',[2] consisting of 'the individual's conscious and unconscious images of what he would like to be, patterned after certain people whom...he regards as ideal'.

This theory massively relates to those of Stryker and McCall/Simmons as they both talk about the strive for success part of Sheldon Striker's identity theory states that:

'Identity is based on the view of others'*

and also

'The more people that follow an identity the stronger it becomes - stronger in numbers'*

(Those are a sample of my notes which relate to the theories, worded in my own words (*Not a direct quote))

These two quotes by Sheldon Striker relate to Freud's theory of Ego ideal, the entire pieces of academic text relate to this directly.

These are all subjects which I am very interested in, but I definitely show more interest in the psychological sides rather than the sociological writings.

Sigmund Freud's idea of a perfect ideal consists of the individuals conscious and not so conscious image of what they would like to be. This is seen as the perfect ideal in Freud's opinion.

In Freud's "On Narcissism: an Introduction" (1914), among other innovations - 'most important of all perhaps - it introduces the concepts of the "ego ideal" and of the self-observing agency related to it, which were the basis of what was ultimately to be decribed as the "super-ego" in The Ego and the Id (1923b)'. Freud considered that the ego ideal was the heir to the narcissism of childhood: the 'ideal ego is now the target of the self-love which was enjoyed in childhood by the actual ego...is the substitute for the lost narcissism of his childhood'.

"an image of the perfect self towards which the ego should aspire."

The Mirror Stage

The mirror stage is when infants recognise themselves literally in the mirror this can occur at different times for infants but usually from 6 months old its only at the age of 15 to 18 months that infants an distinguish themselves from other infants in mirrors.

Lancan takes the mirror stage further and refers to the mental development of a child. In Lancan's forth seminar he states that "the mirror stage is far from a mere phenomenon which occurs in the development of the child. It illustrates the conflictual nature of the dual relationship".

This relates to the comparison between ego and body. Ego being when the child identifies with his own image. However at such a young age a young baby doesn't have control over their body and lacks coordination, despite this Lacan predicted that the infant can still recognise itself in the mirror before gaining control over their body.

This leaves the infant feeling a fragmented body and this is what can form its ego and aggression.

Desire (FREUD / LACAN)

“Man’s desire is the desire of the Other”?

Desire as a theory by Lacan is simply a desire for recognition from others. Secondly what others desire or what others lack. So our desire is always pushing for recognition and to be recognised.

So the more people who follow an identity the more it becomes stronger as an identity.

'Identity is based on the views of others'

Lacan sums this up in saying: “The object of man’s desire, and we are not the first to say this, is essentially an object desired by someone else. One object can become equivalent to another, owing to the effect producted by this intermediary, in making it possible for objects to be exchanged and compared. This process tends to diminish the special significance of any one particular object, but at the same time it brings into view the existence of objects without number” (Lacan, ‘Some Reflections on the Ego’, International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, 34, 11-17; reproduced in Furman and Levy (eds), Influential Papers from the 1950s, Karnac, 2003, p.295 – 296).

Website creation:

Today we had our first workshop into web design, we began learning the very basics and formed a starting point when creating any website.

Here are my notes from the workshop.
We were informed that the most beneficial thing you can do is decide your measurements, fonts and colours before you begin designing and that will make the entire process progress a lot easier.

We had a demonstration of how by using a separate CSS page as a template, it kept all of the design choices the same and kept a recurring theme flowing through the site's pages.

The home page of each HTML site must be saved into a folder called 'Root' and that the home page must be called 'Index' for lingual reasons, as in the french and other such languages wouldn't use the word 'Home', therefor index applies in a variety of languages.

CSS part of the site:

The CSS part of dreamweaver is where I chose which font family I want to display my body copy text, the colour of my back ground, the widths and heights of my pages and all other decisions such as those.

CSS uses 'curly brackets' {} as a command and semi colons ; to end the instruction.

HTML part:
HTML is where I will be placing my information images and other such details.

Commands are given using <> and this part works in conjunction with the CSS template.

Viewing the progress in a web browser:
Before creating my script and code, my site was an empty white background, after the workshop the site now contains text, colour and my chosen margins.

We were directed over to http://www.codecademy.com/, a site which can be used by amateur web designers to aid their process. I have just visited this site and it appears to be very helpful, user friendly and simple to understand. I imagine this will be a site which will massively aid my web design process.

Simple instructions such as this from Code academy will greatly help my design process.

http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/color.html

After finding Code academy and following some interactive demonstrations, I have located a chart which shows all of the colours which are web compatible.

The basic principles of code seem to be something which I will understand over time, but the conjunction between using CSS and HTML is something which is confusing me so far, but I will hopefully get to grasp with it when creating my site.

Researching into Competition briefs:

So far having visited just one website, I have found 4 different design briefs which I fit the criteria for and also after Danny's email, I have found the competition for the Royal mint coin.

After less than 2 minutes of searching on http://www.graphiccompetitions.com/ I had found 4 projects which related to me, so I have book marked these for future reference.

Royal mint
The Royal mint project is something which appeals to me, specifically after hearing of Matt Dent's success; His design has inspired me.
"In 2017 the United Kingdom will introduce a brand new £1 coin – and The Royal Mint invites the nation to create the design it will carry. A fantastic opportunity for members of the public, professional artists and designers alike.

Designing a United Kingdom coin is something that most people would never have thought possible. This is a chance to put your art onto the reverse (the ‘tails’ side) of what will be the United Kingdom’s newest coin, one of the most eagerly awaited coins in circulation.

The winner will receive a £10,000 design fee. More importantly, they will have the pleasure and pride of seeing their design replicated on millions of coins that will be used by the people of the United Kingdom for years to come. The winner will also be invited to The Royal Mint to see their design transformed into actual United Kingdom coins."

"Show what Britain, or ‘Britishness’ means, drawing on all of the
qualities and quirks that make our nation unique."

"designs must not include a recognisable likeness of a known person, whether living or dead"

"The new £1 coin will have the same shape as the 12-sided three pence piece or ‘threepenny bit’."

Matt Dent Royal Mint

After being briefed into our most recent project, OUGD503, Responsive and introduced to competition briefs, we were shown the work of Matt Dent, a winner of Royal Mint's competition to re design the British currency of coins.

"It’s estimated that almost 28 billion United Kingdom coins are in circulation, and if all those circulating coins were laid out side to side they would form a line 397,289 miles long - nearly 16 times around the world."

Matt Dent created a stunning selection of coins despite that the competition brief instructed a designer to attempt to re design a single coin out of 7 options, this designer decided to re design all 7 as a collection, winning him an impressive £35,000 and to be a close partner to Royal mint as a company.

Here show the 7 coins designed by Matt Dent, seamlessly working together in collaboration with each other. It is clear that he initially designed a shield divided into 4 quadrants in each he did a separate design which in my opinion have a 'typically British' feel. The pound coin design featured this shield and a smaller scale version of the whole design which he implemented onto the other 6 coins.

Considering how simple his approach appears to be, it is evident that Matt's design is really eye catching and successful. I love how the design works over the 6 coins in the manner which it does, very inventive and skilful.

OUGD503 Briefing - Studio brief 1, Individual practise

Being briefed into this project we have been instructed to source 5 competition briefs independently and consider our approach to them and then finally to design for these briefs and submit the outcomes before the deadlines.

This is a very professional and mature project and something which I usually have a feeling of apprehensiveness (concerning live briefs and working for professionals), but I'm glad in this instance that the brief requires we jump in both feet first and source our own work.
