Context of practise - responses to my essay

Initial ideas of responses to my essay

During a tutorial with Simon Jones we reflected on the content of my essay and I asked Simon to suggest design responses which would work well in relation to my research.

With the focus of my essay being around Graphic designers' role on social media, internet culture and also the popularity of memes, a response which was brought up was redesigning the layout of a meme to correspond with being 'graphic designer friendly'.

Ideas considered for my COP practical:

  • Archive of most successful internet memes
  • Screen printed t shirts aiming to profit from internet memes
  • Redesigning meme layouts
  • Creating a graphic designer friendly meme layout
  • Designer approved stamp/certificate

Archive of most successful internet memes
A reaction to my COP essay that would catalogue the most successful memes throughout their history on the internet. This would have taken format in a paper publication and also a PDF to be found online.

The aim of creating this would be a designer's approach to internet memes, documenting and recording their success and exploring how a graphic designer can interact with this popular format.

Screen printed t shirts aiming to profit from internet memes
A campaign demonstrating how a graphic designer can go beyond the skills of meme creators to build something of worth, using a variety of skills such as illustration and also screen printing.

These would be sold, not particularly for monetary gain, but to explain how these designs can be taken forward and become something more than an internet trend.

Redesigning meme layouts
Redesigning the layout of a meme to evidence how they could be more effective demonstrating enhanced legibility throughout layout and typeface.

The aim of this would be to again evidence how a graphic designer could input a larger role into the meme world rather than the sort of person who creates internet memes.

Creating a graphic designer friendly meme layout
Similar idea to the previous proposal but a standard meme layout that appeals to a graphic designer's trendy nature more than the existing, with research into current and popular layout, typeface choices and meme design and reinventing this for the artistic world.

Designer approved stamp/certificate
Relating to my essay, proposing to design a stamp/certificate which certifies a designer as a 'professional'/ fit to design so their work can be posted online and respected, as my essay covers, many professional graphic designer's work can be lost amongst the unprofessional actions of others online.
