Thumbnail sketches - Elbow Grounds for divorce:

We were instructed as a way to begin designing, to create thumbnail sketches of our first thoughts on the singles. These thumbnails were based on the artist's name's, the title of the singles, the genre of the songs and the lyrics involved.

I chose to create 8 sketches for each of the singles, so a total of 54 thumbnail sketches were created.
The first series of sketches for a specific single were based on what came to mind in in the first instance of hearing the name of the singles, the middle selections were informed from research and the final were ones which related to the songs, drawings which related in a practical way.
These are full pictures of all my complete thumbnail sketches on A1 paper, a total of 66 sketches.

Elbow - Grounds for divorce:
Earthquake
The left thumbnail sketch represents an earthquake or a fissure which could be swallowing up a wedding ring to show that a marriage has failed and there is 'Grounds for divorce'.
This sketch has been based purely on my thoughts from hearing the name of the track.
Chinese Cigarette packet
A lyric from the track is "There's a Chinese cigarette case", so this sketch represents that in a practical and obvious way. I prefer to stray away from ideas such as this as it is too obvious for my likings, and I prefer something more deep routed or conceptual.
Cocktail glass
One of the beginning lines in the track involves the words: "cocktail called "Grounds For Divorce", for this reason I have sketched out a simple cocktail glass to show this, again this thumbnail is very basic and for that reason I wouldn't progress such an idea.
Earthquake wedding ring
This sketch follows on from the first, which is a closer version of a ring falling into a fissure/earthquake, to show the end of a marriage.
Handing letters
This idea shows a pair of people exchanging letters as they would over a divorce. Based around the title of the track and what came to mind in the first instance of hearing the title. This could be developed further but I feel it lacks thought.
Tattoo'd elbow
This is a very obvious and satirical sketch, it consists of an elbow (pun on the artist's name), which has a tattoo of an old lover, whom now wouldn't be together, showing a break-up or divorce.
I like this concept as it has thought behind it and is light hearted. I could develop this into more than a sketch.
Person on sticks
This sketch  is representational of the lyric "Doubt comes in on sticks", somehow I would have to represent 'doubt' as a person or some kind of figure. This idea is one of my favourites from the selections of lyrics, as it leaves a lot open to interpretation.
Twisted karaoke
The right image is my interpretation of "There'll be twisted karaoke at the Aniseed Lounge", it shows a microphone which is skewed/twisted, this idea is very basic and not one that I would imagine would look better in a later stage.
Polishing a compass
The left sketch shows a compass being polished, a very obvious development taken from lyrics from the song. This idea, like the others based on lyrics isn't a very good one I feel and I wouldn't want to develop it further.
"Further roses"
The thumbnail on the right is one which uses roses and petals to show a path, something which has very obvious connotations to romance, which this song isn't talking about necessarily.
Using roses to represent love and romance in a song is very cliché in my opinion and not something I'd like to create.

Evaluation
From this task of creating thumbnail sketches about the first ideas that come into mind, I have learnt things about my preferences when creating designs.
-I don't like designing when the outcome is based too close to the initial idea, which isn't very strong.
-Common clichés are not things which I would like to design near when creating.
-I prefer designs with a strong, solid concept, rather than a weak one.
