I took the range of varying designs that I had to the interim crit to see what feedback I could receive and how I could develop my designs further.
The questions I asked are on the right of each page, and these were the pictures I printed which represented my work.
Lorde single cover feedback:- Diamonds, maybe circles are an interesting use of shape.
- Colour experiments, try making paint mixes + photographing.
- If there's a reason to use diamonds, yes. If not change it to something that relates to the song.
- The pattern on it is working, use varying colours though.
- Can't see the idea behind it, but it has good aesthetic qualities.
- Bottom left diamond one is cool.
- Pretty fond of the diamond pattern.
- Play around with the colour. Line around the diamond is too thick also.
- Research into the meaning of diamonds.
- Bottom left image shows the structure of the diamond and is quite simple, best one.
- Reduce the stroke weight or get rid of it completely. Experiment with different colours.
- The bottom left diamonds look darker which is more appropriate.
- Make a shape out of the Diamonds, rather than a print.
- Use symbols that have meaning.
For this crit, unfortunately I didn't write the name of the single on my design sheet so some of the feedback shows that my peers thought the Lorde cover with the diamonds was representation of Black Sabbath's track.
- The graffiti Ozzy has an effective style and is best
- Try different backgrounds or spend more time developing the illustrator idea.
- The bottom left Ozzy is the most successful.
- The Graffiti fits with the song meaning of Anarchy.
- The rebellious spray paint fits with the song lyrics.
- The lines are too thick on the illustrator Ozzy
- I don't like the grainy look on the other Ozzys.
Evaluation and further steps:
I have received the feedback which I needed as I was at a stage of where I didn't know how I could develop my pieces, and I know feel that I do.
Lorde cover:
I have been instructed to reduce the stroke around each diamond and to experiment with colour, I was also informed that the best design with the diamonds is the bottom left, which has the diamonds over lapping and creating an illusion effect. Also that the circles figure of 4 was quite appealing.
I have been told that I could experiment with other symbols that relate to the song, I could see how that would go.
Black Sabbath:
The Illustrator Ozzy would need more work and the background to be changed, not many people chose that one as their favourite one. The spray paint puts the Ozzy into context and the colours represent that genre of music. People were undecided whether the Ozzy on the grey brick wall was the best or the one in the bottom left with a background.
I now have a few different routes to go down when developing these further, and have booked a Digital print session for before the final crit.
