Research
The research element of this design project developed from the topics found in my dissertation. Various banned film posters had already been discussed such as Sin city 2, I spit on your grave and also Ali G indahouse, I decided not to redesign any of these posters and target James bond films as an outlet.
A redesign of a film poster felt critical and to be the obvious step after the content of my dissertation revolved around the design of film posters and researched into their effectivity.
Other alternatives explored were creating a document to publish the interviews that were conducted whilst also evidencing the banned film posters that had been discussed in the dissertation.

Visual research evidenced how traditional James bond posters were created by hand illustrated methods due to the technology around at that time (1950s) opinions found in the interviews suggested how the female body was less offensive in illustrated form rather than photographic due to the image not directly being connected to a person.

Investigation into Michael Gillette’s traditional psychedelic Bond posters evidenced how this designer had created a series of posters to represent each film and also each ‘Bond girl’.
The design and content of these posters had more relation to the females and the female’s bodies of the Bond films than to the story.
Each poster created by Gillette contained a partially naked Bond girl in a seductive or sexual pose. Posters that reflected the females in these films rather than the actual story or genre of the titles, even so, these posters were designed to a very high quality.

A more modern Bond film was chosen for the poster redesign and Casino Royale was selected.
This film in particular instead of any other of the films in the series due to the plot of Casino Royale involving love interest with the female alias of James Bond and in general being more than just a ‘Bond girl.
As is witnessed in the poster above, the design featuring the female character Vesper shows her in a seductive pose, bearing skin whilst in a glamorous outfit. The character in the film plays much more of a role than just ‘eye candy’ such as in some of the other Bond films and a poster should represent this.

With James Bond films being known for their attractive female actresses it would be a challenge to create a poster that undervalued their roles in the film.
