First hand research survey

The secondary research led me onto wanting to pursue my own primary research. I followed this route firstly using Facebook to gather the opinion of my own friends and social circles, gaining an insight into the opinions of various people of my age range with the addition of people who personally knew me so wouldn't hold back their opinions.

Using survey monkey as a way to anonymously interview my friends and people I socialise with, the anonymity of survey monkey would generally give more honest answers to my topic than personally interviewing people. Anonymity can be crucial when discussing potentially controversial topics such as sexism.

Quite a variety of people responded to my questionnaire, some people not seeing this as an issue and something to be expected in the music industry, and others giving their own explanations as to why this may be happening.

How does seeing this image make you feel?

Very negatively actually. I am a little annoyed.

Angered.

Sad, but not very surprised.

Neutral. Don't care.

Confused and disappointed

Doesn't bother me

As I mentioned, these responses are varied between people who are shocked by the image and people who don't have an opinion or are to expect a result like this.

What do you think the reasons behind this misrepresentation are?

To be honest, most of them are bands so I feel a little differently about this. This about it this way, when you watch X-Factor I would say that most people are female and so they are going to vote for 'The Hot Guy/s' and so these people are the ones that win and become famous- I guess in a way we are doing this ourselves. Women in the music industry have to be careful of how they are representing themselves, one foot wrong and that it the end. Where as guys can get away with 'just being a lad'. Age is another, Unless you are a 'classic' once you hit maybe 40 that's the end or your career (you're old and aren't sexy anymore), For guys, again this is different. (I just waffled about a load of nonsence- don't know if this helps).

Women aren't encouraged to be serious musicions. Frankly, a lot of rock music is super misogynistic/homophobic/transphobic. The network of support for female rockers just isn't there.

*Sexism in the music industry and the local music scenes. *It's difficult for women to get into the scene when they're treated as sex objects or novelties (being referred to as female guitarist, not just guitarist). *Many men see everything women do as related to them, meaning that no matter what a woman does, she will be punished for it (if they're bad at playing it's "Of course she's bad, she's a woman" and if she's good then it's "She's just trying to show off. What a whore!"). In these guys' minds it's impossible for a woman to do music for her own enjoyment. *If a woman starts a rock band with only women they will be referred to as a female rock band, not as a rock band.

Promoters choose acts that will draw crowd and sell tickets, dependent on act that are touring at that time.
